Adrienne  > Travel > Washington National Zoo
Early January 2006
This year the AAS meeting was in Washington, D.C. and was located within blocks of the Washington National Zoo. I took the opportunity to wander up there each morning to try to see the 6 month old baby panda! On my last day I finally saw him. Enjoy my zoo pictures!

Tai Shan (6 months old) and his mother Mei Xiang. He was bobbling all over her trying to get at the juice bottle she was drinking.

Mei swatted Tai off her and he rolled in the leaves down the little hill!

I was lucky on Wed morning - there was a camera crew there filming so they brought Tai and Mei out to a better area to film, which made him very visible to the 10 or so of us who wandered out in the early morning mist to see him. He was extremely curious about the camera and followed the camera guy for a few seconds. Must have looked great from the video camera angle!

Monday was a beautiful sunny and warm day, one of the first in a while for DC. By the time I got to see Tai, he was fast asleep next to the fence. All we could see was a little tuft of white fur (see arrow)

The male Sumatran, Rokan, was quite active. He was walking the outskirts of his enclosure huffing and making grunting noises.
